The Ryan-Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act, enacted in 2008, amended the Controlled Substances Act to govern how controlled substances are prescribed online in the U.S. Under this act, a valid prescription for controlled substances requires an initial in-person medical evaluation by a practitioner or a covering practitioner who relies on an initial in-person or telemedicine-based evaluation done within the last 24 months. However, there have been exceptions due to the public health emergency (PHE) declared in 2020, which waived the in-person evaluation mandate.
